Buying crypto in New Zealand is legal and straightforward; the choices that matter are which on-ramp you use and which network you send on.

The short version

• Buy via a local broker (Easy Crypto is the best known) for simplicity at roughly 0.5–1% all-in, or an exchange with NZD markets (Independent Reserve, Swyftx and others) for tighter spreads. Fund by bank transfer or POLi.
• Move on Solana, BNB Smart Chain or Tron for stablecoins; use Ethereum only when the destination requires it.
• Tax: IRD treats crypto as property; disposals are usually taxable. Keep a record of every buy, sell and transfer.

Regulation, briefly

Crypto is legal to buy, hold and send. Providers that hold client money or offer financial products are on the Financial Service Providers Register and answer to the FMA. New Zealand is implementing the OECD's crypto reporting framework, so expect exchanges to collect and report more identity information over the next couple of years. None of this restricts what you can do with your own funds.

• NZD → USDT: broker fee ~0.5–1% or exchange fee 0.1–0.5% plus spread.
• Exchange withdrawal: typically flat per asset and network; brokers sometimes include it.

Things that go wrong

• Sending on the wrong network. Match both sides.
• Brokers quoting a price that includes the spread, then adding a fee — compare the NZD you pay against the crypto you receive, not the headline rate.
• Bank fraud checks delaying a first transfer to a new crypto provider. Normal; call the bank rather than retrying.
